01 — PRINCIPLE
The room matters more than the microphone
If you have a fixed budget and you are choosing between a better microphone and a better room, choose the room. A three-hundred-pound microphone in a bare, echoey spare bedroom will sound worse than a fifty-pound one in a wardrobe full of coats.
This is because the two things listeners actually notice — reverb and background noise — are both properties of the space, not the microphone. A better microphone captures the room's problems in higher fidelity. It does not remove them.
There is a second reason that matters specifically for meditation teachers: consistency. If you are publishing a series, listeners notice when session four sounds different from session three. A dedicated corner you can return to and set up identically each time is worth more than any single piece of equipment.
02 — CHOOSE
Choose the right space in the home you already have
Walk around your home and clap once, sharply, in each room. Listen to what happens immediately after the clap. In a good recording space the sound simply stops. In a bad one you hear a short ring or a flutter as the clap bounces between parallel hard surfaces.
The best-sounding room in a typical home is almost never the one that looks most like a studio. Bedrooms beat living rooms. Wardrobes beat bedrooms. Kitchens, bathrooms and any room with a hard floor and bare walls are the worst options, regardless of how quiet they are.
Then think about noise, which is a separate question. The quietest room is usually the one furthest from the street, away from the boiler and the fridge, and on the side of the building with fewer windows. Sometimes the softest room and the quietest room are different rooms, in which case take the softest and control the noise by choosing your recording hours.
- Clap test each candidate room and listen for ring.
- Prefer carpet over hard floor.
- Prefer a room with soft furniture, curtains and full shelves.
- Check distance from the boiler, fridge and street.
- Check whether you can close a door between you and the rest of the household.
- Confirm you can leave a setup in place, or reproduce it quickly.
03 — TREAT
Soften reflections with what you already own
Purpose-made acoustic foam is not necessary and, used badly, is not even particularly effective. Thin foam absorbs high frequencies and leaves the lower midrange untouched, which can make a room sound duller without making it sound less reverberant.
Thickness and mass do the work. A duvet, a heavy blanket, a rug hung on the wall or a rail of winter coats will outperform an equivalent area of thin foam. Place the softest material at the first reflection points: directly behind the microphone as you face it, behind you, and on the nearest side wall.
Break up parallel surfaces. If you must record in a rectangular room, sit at a slight angle to the walls rather than square to them, and avoid the exact centre of the room and the corners.
The cheapest genuinely good option remains a clothes wardrobe. The hanging fabric surrounds you on several sides at once, which is precisely what a purpose-built vocal booth is trying to achieve.
Do the clap test again after treating the room. If the ring is gone, stop. Additional treatment past that point costs money and makes recordings sound lifeless.
04 — NOISE
Hunt down every noise source before you record
Stand in your recording spot, close your eyes and listen for a full minute without doing anything else. Most people are surprised by how much they find. The brain filters continuous noise out in daily life and a microphone does not.
The usual offenders, in rough order of how often they ruin recordings: heating and air conditioning, fridges and freezers, computer and laptop fans, extractor fans, aquariums, dehumidifiers, LED and fluorescent light fittings that buzz, and phones on a desk receiving data.
Anything continuous and low — a fridge hum, a fan — is the hardest kind of noise to remove cleanly later, because filtering it also thins your voice. Anything intermittent and loud — a door, a car, a dog — is easy to remove but forces you to re-record the phrase it landed on. Both are cheaper to prevent than to fix.
Choose your hour deliberately. Early morning and late evening are quieter almost everywhere, and for meditation recording the calmer state you are in at those times is itself an advantage.
- Heating and air conditioning off, and given a minute to stop.
- Fridge, freezer and dehumidifier unplugged or out of earshot.
- Laptop fans idle — close heavy applications before recording.
- Phone in aeroplane mode and off the recording surface.
- Overhead lights that buzz switched off; use a lamp.
- Household informed, door closed, pets settled elsewhere.
- One minute of room tone recorded and listened back at high volume.
05 — MICROPHONE
Choose a microphone that suits an untreated home
For recording at home, the useful distinction is not price but pickup pattern and sensitivity. A dynamic microphone with a cardioid pattern is less sensitive and hears less of the room, which is exactly what you want in a space you cannot fully treat. Large-diaphragm condensers are more detailed and more flattering, but they also capture the fridge two rooms away.
If your room is soft and quiet, a condenser will give you a warmer, more intimate voice, which suits meditation well. If your room is compromised, a dynamic will give you a cleaner result even though it is technically the lesser microphone.
USB or XLR is a workflow question rather than a quality one at this level. USB plugs straight into a computer and is simpler. XLR needs an audio interface but gives you room to upgrade. Either is fine for meditation.
And if you are starting today with nothing: modern phone microphones, held a hand's width away in a wardrobe, produce entirely publishable meditation audio. Do not let equipment be the reason you have not recorded anything.
06 — POSITION
Position the microphone, and position yourself
Put the microphone on a stand rather than on the desk. Desks transmit every touch, tap and shift of weight directly into the microphone body, and that thump is very difficult to remove.
Set it slightly above mouth height and angled down towards you. This keeps direct breath off the capsule and tends to produce a slightly clearer, less chesty tone.
Decide whether you sit or stand and then always do the same thing. Standing usually gives better breath support; sitting is easier to hold still for a long session. Either works, but changing between sessions changes your sound.
If you read from a script, use a tablet or printed pages on a stand at eye level rather than paper in your hands. Paper rustle is one of the most common avoidable noises in home-recorded meditations, and turning a page silently is harder than it sounds.

- Photograph your finished setup so you can rebuild it exactly.
07 — TEST
Test before you commit to a full session
Record a two-minute test containing the things that actually reveal problems: a normal-volume passage, a deliberately quiet passage, a sentence loaded with p and b sounds, and thirty seconds of silence.
Listen back on headphones at a higher volume than you would normally use. The silence is the most informative part — that is where the room shows itself. If the silence is genuinely quiet and your quiet passage is still clearly audible, the setup is working.
Nothing is more discouraging than discovering after recording a twenty-minute session that a fan was running throughout. Two minutes of testing is the cheapest insurance in audio.
08 — LIMITS
What to fix in the room, and what to leave to software
Software fixes some things well and other things badly, and knowing which is which tells you where to spend your effort.
Handled well by software: steady low-level hiss and hum, occasional clicks, inconsistent loudness between passages, an unwanted cough or stumble, and overall level matching across a series.
Handled badly or not at all: room reverb, clipping and distortion, heavy plosives, vocal fry, and loud intermittent noise underneath speech. These are room and technique problems, and no amount of processing recovers them without leaving obvious artefacts.
The practical implication: spend your energy on the room, the distance and the level. Then use enhancement lightly, for the residue rather than as the main event.
