How to start a video podcast

Video podcasts can grow faster, but they cost more time than audio. Here is how to decide whether to film, a simple beginner setup, and a workflow that keeps the audio as the master.

01 · Decide

Should you film at all?

Video helps discovery on YouTube and social platforms, and it makes clips far more engaging. It also adds lighting, framing, wardrobe and a longer edit to every episode.

Ask what your listener is doing. If they are driving or walking, a screen adds nothing. If your content is visual, a demonstration or a reaction, video adds a lot. See audio-only podcasts: when video is not worth it for the honest comparison.

A common compromise: film every episode but use the video mainly for short clips, and publish audio as the main format.

02 · Setup

A simple beginner setup

  • Camera: a recent phone or a decent webcam is enough to start
  • Light: face a window, or use one soft light in front of you
  • Sound: a separate microphone, not the camera's built-in one
  • Background: tidy and simple, with something personal but not distracting

Audio quality matters more than video quality. Viewers forgive soft video. They leave when they cannot hear clearly.

03 · Record

Recording guests

For in-person guests, use one microphone each and one or two cameras. For remote guests, use a remote recording tool that captures each person locally rather than recording a video call, which compresses both picture and sound.

Record a little before and after the conversation so you have room to edit.

04 · Edit

Keep the audio as the master

Edit the audio first: remove the false starts, the long pauses and the tangents. Then make the video follow those edits. Cutting for the eye and accepting whatever the audio becomes is how video podcasts end up sounding worse than audio ones.

Hilite handles the audio side: recording, cleanup, transcript-based editing and short shareable clips. Export the finished audio and sync it in your video editor for the full video version.

Cut the episode by editing the transcript first.

05 · Clips

Clips are where video pays off

Even if few people watch full video episodes, short vertical clips with faces and captions are one of the most effective ways to grow a podcast. Pull two or three 30 to 60 second moments from each episode and post them on YouTube Shorts, Instagram Reels and TikTok.

Choose moments that start strong and stand alone without context. A clip that begins mid-sentence on the most interesting line performs better than one that starts with a greeting. Hilite can create shareable clips from the episode without leaving the editor.

06 · Publish

Publish video and audio

Upload the video version to YouTube, and publish the audio version through your podcast RSS feed so it reaches Spotify, Apple Podcasts and other apps. Some hosts can also distribute video to Spotify. See how to start a podcast on YouTube.
