01 — The difference
One channel or two
Mono is a single channel of audio, played identically through every speaker. Stereo is two channels, left and right, carrying different information so sounds can be placed across a space.
Stereo only means something when the two channels actually differ. Recording one microphone into two channels gives you two identical channels, which is not stereo. It is mono in a file twice the size.
That is the whole confusion, really. Most recording software offers stereo by default, most people leave it there, and most of the resulting files carry no stereo information at all.
02 — For speech
Why podcasts are mono
A voice comes from one point in space. There is nothing to spread across a stereo field, so nothing is lost by recording it as one channel.
Mono also halves the file size at the same bitrate, which matters when a podcast host charges for bandwidth and every listener downloads every episode.
And it is safer. A lot of listening happens on one earbud, in a car with a speaker on one side, or through a single smart speaker. Mono sounds identical in all of those. A stereo file where something important sits on one side does not.
Podcast loudness targets reflect this: roughly minus 16 LUFS for stereo and minus 19 for mono, because the two are measured differently.
Mono at 96 kbps is close to half the size of stereo at 128 and sounds the same on a single voice. On a show with real download numbers that is a meaningful saving.
03 — When stereo is right
The cases that need two channels
Music, always. Instruments spread across a stereo image is most of what makes a mix sound like a record rather than a demo.
Ambience and field recording, where the point is to convey a place: a street, a forest, a room with things happening around you.
ASMR and binaural recording, where the spatial effect is the entire experience and mono destroys it.
Drama and audio fiction, where placing characters in a scene carries meaning. Even there, dialogue is often recorded mono and placed afterwards, which gives more control than recording it in position.
04 — The common accident
A voice on only one side
Recording a mono microphone into a stereo track often puts the signal entirely on the left channel and leaves the right silent. In headphones the voice appears in one ear, which is immediately obvious and sounds broken.
The fix is quick. In Audacity, use the track menu and Split Stereo Track, delete the silent channel, and set the remaining one to mono. In most other editors there is a channel or pan setting that achieves the same thing.
The prevention is to set your recording software to mono when you are using one microphone. Look for a channel count of 1 rather than 2 in the recording settings.
Always check a test recording in headphones rather than on speakers. A one-sided recording is nearly impossible to notice on a laptop and unmissable in headphones.

05 — Two people
Separate tracks, not left and right
Recording two people through a two-input interface often lands one voice on the left channel and one on the right. That is a recording convenience, not a finished format.
Split them into separate mono tracks before editing, so you can level and clean each voice independently. Then mix down to mono for release, with both voices centred.
Publishing a conversation with one person hard left and one hard right is a genuinely bad listening experience. It is disorienting on headphones and half the conversation disappears on a single speaker.
A very slight separation, a few per cent either side of centre, can help listeners tell two similar voices apart. Hard panning does not.
