01 · START WITH FIT
Pitch the brands your listeners already use
Small shows rarely win sponsors on download numbers. They win on fit: a listener base that is unusually specific and unusually loyal. Start with brands you already mention, tools your guests recommend and products your listeners ask you about.
A proposal to ten well-matched brands beats a template sent to a hundred. Each one should explain why this brand, specifically, belongs on this show.
02 · THE TEMPLATE
The six sections of a one-page proposal
Keep the proposal to one page. A sponsor manager should be able to decide whether to reply in under a minute.
- Show summary: name, format, release schedule, one line on what it is about
- Audience: who listens, where, and the one detail that makes them valuable to this brand
- Numbers: average downloads per episode in the first 30 days, plus any engagement proof
- Placements: pre-roll, mid-roll, post-roll, show notes link, newsletter mention
- Pricing: a simple package and a test option
- Why this brand: one sentence on fit and one idea for the read
03 · PRICING
How to price your first sponsorship
Podcast ads are commonly priced as a CPM, the cost per thousand downloads, with mid-roll priced higher than pre-roll or post-roll. Rates vary widely by niche, so treat any published range as a starting point, not a rule.
For a small show, a flat fee per episode is often easier for both sides. Offer a short test, such as three episodes, with a clear way to measure results: a dedicated code or link. A sponsor who sees the code being used will usually renew.
04 · OUTREACH
The outreach email
Subject: [Show Name] x [Brand]: a sponsorship idea for [audience]
Hi [Name], I host [Show Name], a [weekly] podcast for [specific audience]. [One sentence on why your listeners already care about this brand, such as a guest who recommended it or a question listeners keep asking.] I have put together a one-page proposal for a three-episode test with a dedicated code so you can measure results directly. Would it be useful if I sent it over? [Your Name]
05 · DELIVER
Deliver well and the renewal sells itself
Ask for the brand's talking points and any required wording, write the read in your own voice and send it for approval before recording. After each episode, send a short note with the publish date and the link. At the end of the test, share the results and propose the next step.
- Get talking points and required wording
- Send the read for approval
- Disclose the sponsorship clearly on air
- Report results after the test
Land the sponsor, then record the read.
Record host-read ads as separate takes and drop them into any episode in Hilite.
