Spotify audio normalization: what it does to your audio

Spotify adjusts the loudness of everything it plays to a target level. Here are the actual numbers, what the setting does on your own account, and what it means for anyone publishing to the platform.

01 — What it is

Everything gets adjusted to the same loudness

Loudness normalization is Spotify measuring how loud a track or episode is and applying a gain adjustment at playback so everything sits at a similar level. Without it, listeners would be reaching for the volume control between every item.

Two things are worth being clear about. Nothing is changed in the file you uploaded, only in how it is played back. And this happens by default on almost every account, so the loudness you mastered is not the loudness most people hear.

02 — The actual targets

Spotify offers three normalization levels, each with a published target measured in LUFS, the standard unit for perceived loudness.

Normal targets -14 LUFS and is the default. Loud targets -11 LUFS. Quiet targets -19 LUFS, which suits careful listening on good equipment where you want the dynamics preserved.

On the Loud setting Spotify also applies a limiter to prevent distortion in quieter, more dynamic material. It engages at -1 dB with a 5 millisecond attack and a 100 millisecond decay.

03 — Up and down are not symmetrical

Louder masters lose more than quiet ones gain

If your audio is louder than the target, Spotify simply turns it down. Negative gain introduces no distortion of its own, so a loud master is not damaged, only quietened.

Turning something up is more cautious, because raising a quiet file risks pushing its peaks into the ceiling. Spotify looks at the headroom available and leaves about 1 dB of room for lossy encoding, which means a very quiet file may not be lifted all the way to target.

Their own example: a file at -20 LUFS whose loudest true peak reaches -5 dBFS is only raised to -16 LUFS rather than -14, because that is all the headroom allows.

Tip

This is why mastering as loud as possible achieves nothing on a normalized platform. It gets turned back down, and you have spent your dynamic range for no gain in perceived loudness.

04 — On your own account

Changing or turning off the setting

In the Spotify app, open Settings and look for the audio quality or playback section. There you will find a switch for normalizing volume and, when it is on, the choice between Quiet, Normal and Loud.

Turning it off means every item plays at whatever loudness it was uploaded at. On a mixed playlist that is jarring, which is why leaving it on is the better default for almost everyone.

The one situation where Loud earns its place is listening in a noisy environment, such as a car or a gym, where the extra 3 dB helps. Quiet is worth choosing on headphones at home when you would rather hear the full dynamic range.

05 — If you publish

Because playback is normalized, the useful goal is to land near the target with clean headroom rather than to be loud. Mastering a spoken-word episode in the region of -14 to -16 LUFS integrated gives Spotify very little to adjust and leaves room for peaks.

Keep true peaks a decibel or so below full scale. That headroom is what stops the encoder producing peaks above the ceiling, and it is also what allows Spotify to raise a quiet file properly if it needs to.

Consistency across episodes matters more than the exact number. A listener notices when one episode is noticeably quieter than the last, and gentle compression on the voice does more for that than pushing the master level.

06 — Everywhere else

Other platforms normalize too

Spotify is not unusual. The major streaming and video platforms all apply some form of loudness normalization, though their targets differ, and each publishes its own figure.

The practical consequence is that one sensible master serves everywhere. Aim for a consistent, clean level with real headroom, use a normalizer to hold every episode to the same target, and let each platform make its own small adjustment.
