01 — Define the change you can support
Choose a specific public-interest purpose
A podcast can inform, document, connect, or help an audience act, but it rarely changes a complex issue by itself. Define the audience and the realistic contribution the show can make.
Write an editorial promise that is separate from fundraising or organizational promotion. Listeners should understand what they will learn or hear in every episode.
02 — Decide whose voices shape the show
Move beyond symbolic participation
Invite people with lived experience, practitioners, researchers, and affected communities according to the subject. Do not ask one participant to represent an entire population.
Discuss compensation, preparation, consent, anonymity, interpretation, and review where appropriate. Participation should create value for the contributor rather than simply supplying emotional material.
03 — Build a credible editorial process
Separate evidence, experience, and opinion
Research the issue before recording and prepare questions that test assumptions rather than confirming the organization’s preferred narrative. Verify important factual claims and link to reliable sources in the notes.
Explain uncertainty and disagreement clearly. Correct errors visibly and avoid editing contributors into conclusions they did not express.
04 — Record with care
Give contributors control over sensitive moments
Explain the format, audience, distribution, editing, and promotional use before recording. Allow pauses and give participants a clear way to identify material that should be reviewed or removed.
Use a quiet setup, monitor the recording, and keep a backup. Good production protects the contributor from having to repeat a difficult conversation because of a technical failure.
05 — Connect listening to useful action
Measure outcomes beyond reach
Provide a small number of relevant actions and resources rather than a generic appeal. Tailor them to what the listener can realistically do after the episode.
Evaluate partner use, resource visits, community feedback, learning, and relationship-building alongside plays. Review whether the show is serving the people at the center of the issue.
Turn the idea into finished audio.
