01 · Calling
Start with who you are serving
Christian podcasts serve many different listeners: new believers, people exploring faith, a church congregation during the week, parents, young adults, leaders. Each one needs something different.
Before you plan anything, write one sentence: "This podcast helps [who] to [what]." For example, "This podcast helps busy mothers spend ten minutes in Scripture each morning." That sentence will guide your format, length and tone.
02 · Format
Choose a format that fits your gifts
- Sermon podcast: your church's preaching, published weekly. See how to start a sermon podcast.
- Church podcast: sermons plus announcements, testimonies and interviews. See how to start a church podcast.
- Bible study: working through a book of the Bible over a season. See how to start a Bible study podcast.
- Daily devotional: a short reading, reflection and prayer. See how to start a daily devotional podcast.
- Conversation or interview: faith and everyday life, testimonies, or questions people ask.
You do not have to pick only one, but pick a main format so listeners know what they are getting.
03 · Content
Plan a season, not just an episode
Plan in seasons of eight to twelve episodes: a book of the Bible, a theme like prayer or forgiveness, or a series through the church calendar such as Advent or Lent. Seasons give you a clear finish line and give listeners a reason to start from episode one.
Hilite has free outlines you can adapt, including the sermon outline, sermon series ideas and the Bible study podcast template.
04 · Care
Handle hard topics with care
Faith podcasts often touch grief, anxiety, doubt, marriage and suffering. Speak honestly, and be clear about where pastoral support ends and professional help begins. When you talk about mental health, encourage listeners to see a doctor or counsellor, and say that seeking help is not a failure of faith.
If you share testimonies or stories from your congregation, get permission first and change details where people could be identified.
05 · Record
Keep the setup simple
A USB microphone and a quiet room are enough for a devotional or Bible study. For sermons, record from the church sound desk or a microphone near the pulpit, then clean up the room echo afterwards. See church sermon podcast setup.
Hilite removes echo and background noise, lets you trim the announcements by editing the transcript, and publishes to Spotify and Apple Podcasts.
06 · Share
Help it reach people
Mention the podcast from the pulpit and in your church newsletter. Encourage members to share one episode with one friend. Post short clips of a key verse or a moment of the message on your church's social media.
