How to transfer a voice memo to a computer

Use AirDrop for an Apple device nearby. Use iCloud Drive when you want the file to appear across devices. Email or a private message works for a short memo, while a cable is useful when cloud transfer is unavailable.

Voice Memos normally shares an M4A file, which most modern editors accept.

Open Voice Memos, select the recording, tap the share button, and choose AirDrop. Select the Mac and accept the file if prompted.

The memo usually arrives in Downloads. Rename it before moving into an editing project.

From the share sheet, choose Save to Files and select an iCloud Drive folder. On a Mac, open Finder and iCloud Drive. On Windows, use iCloud for Windows or sign in to iCloud in a browser.

Wait for the upload to finish before deleting anything from the phone.

Email is convenient when the file is below the attachment limit. You can also save to Dropbox, Google Drive, or another installed storage provider from the share sheet.

For a cable workflow, connect the device and use the supported Apple device tools on the computer; the exact interface depends on the operating-system version.

Upload the M4A file to Hilite to trim mistakes, clean up speech, generate a transcript, or export a more widely requested format such as MP3.

Keep the original memo until the edited copy has been checked.
