How to do a voiceover on Instagram Reels

Add your voice over an Instagram Reel step by step, balance it with music, and record a cleaner take when the in-app voiceover sounds rough.

01 · Step by step

How to add a voiceover to a Reel

Start a new Reel, record or add your clips, and go to the editing screen. Open the audio controls (the music note) and choose Voiceover, or open the full video editor and add a voiceover there. Tap the point on the timeline where the voice should start, hold or tap the record button, and speak. Instagram updates these menus often, so if you don't see Voiceover, look in the audio or edit options.

  • 1. Create a Reel and add clips
  • 2. Open audio controls or the video editor
  • 3. Choose Voiceover and set the start point
  • 4. Record, then trim or re-record
  • 5. Preview before sharing

02 · Mix

Balance your voice with the music

In the audio controls, lower the music and the camera audio and keep the voiceover at full volume. Check the Reel on your phone speaker with the volume at half; if you can't follow every word, the music is too loud.

  • Voiceover at full volume
  • Music low
  • Camera audio off unless you need it

03 · The cleaner route

Record a cleaner voiceover outside Instagram

Instagram can't clean up noise or cut stumbles. Record in the free voiceover recorder, run AI enhancement, and combine it with your clips in an editor like CapCut. Then upload the finished video as your Reel.

  • Write a short script first
  • Record in a soft, quiet room
  • Clean, export, combine, upload

Reels that sound as good as they look.
