How to do a voiceover on TikTok (for beginners)

A plain-English, step-by-step guide to adding your voice over a TikTok video, for first-timers of any age, plus how to get a cleaner-sounding voiceover than the in-app recorder gives you.

01 · The basics

What a TikTok voiceover is

A voiceover is your voice playing over the video, recorded after you film. It is the easiest way to show up on TikTok without talking to the camera: film your hands, your garden, your kitchen or your screen, then explain what is happening in your own words.

  • You don't need to be on camera
  • You can redo the voice without refilming
  • Works with any clip already on your phone

02 · Step by step

How to add a voiceover in the TikTok app

Tap the plus button and record or upload your video. Move to the editing screen and look for Voiceover: TikTok has placed it in the right-hand toolbar and inside the audio editing menu at different times, but it always has a microphone icon. Drag to where you want the voice to start, tap the red button and speak. Tap again to stop, then tap Save or Done.

  • 1. Tap + and record or upload a clip
  • 2. Open the editor and find the microphone (Voiceover) icon
  • 3. Pick the start point
  • 4. Tap record, speak, tap to stop
  • 5. Save, then post or save as a draft

03 · Sound

Mute the original sound so your voice is clear

When you record a voiceover, TikTok usually gives you an option to keep or remove the original sound. Turn the original sound off if it has background chatter, or lower its volume in the sound settings so your voice sits on top. If you add music, keep it low.

  • Original sound off for talking-over videos
  • Music low enough to hear every word
  • Play it back on your phone speaker before posting

04 · Tips

Beginner tips for a voiceover that sounds natural

Write three or four short lines before you record, one per scene, and say them like you are talking to one friend. You can borrow a structure from these voiceover script examples. Record in a soft room (a bedroom or a closet with clothes beats a kitchen), and hold the phone about a hand's width from your mouth.

  • Hook in the first sentence
  • One short line per scene
  • Smile while you talk; it carries in the voice
  • Do it twice and keep the better one

05 · The cleaner route

Get a cleaner voiceover than the in-app recorder

TikTok's recorder can't remove background noise or the ums. For videos you care about, record in the free voiceover recorder, use noise removal and filler word removal, then combine voice and video in an editor such as CapCut before uploading the finished video to TikTok.

  • Record and clean the voice
  • Export as MP3 or WAV
  • Combine with the video in CapCut or iMovie
  • Upload the finished video to TikTok

Sound clear on every TikTok.

Record your voiceover in the browser, remove noise and ums in Hilite, then add it to your video.
