How to record audio on a Mac

Voice Memos is fast for short notes. QuickTime Player can capture a simple audio file. A browser recorder is the better fit when you want to move directly from recording into transcription and editing.

Choose based on what happens after you press stop, not only on how quickly you can start.

Open System Settings, Sound, Input and choose the microphone you intend to use. Speak normally and confirm the input meter moves without reaching its limit.

In the recording tool, confirm the same microphone is selected. A ten-second test prevents an entire take being captured from the wrong device.

Place the Mac on a stable surface, close notification-heavy apps, and record in a room with soft furnishings. If you use the built-in microphone, keep a consistent position instead of leaning toward and away from the screen.

Leave a few seconds of room tone at the beginning. It makes later cleanup easier.

For more than a top-and-tail trim, upload or record in Hilite and edit the audio by editing its transcript. Remove repeated phrases, false starts, and long pauses without learning a waveform editor.

Export an MP3 for convenient sharing or retain a higher-quality file when another editor still needs to work on it.

Where do Voice Memos save? They remain in Voice Memos and can sync through iCloud. Where do QuickTime recordings save? You choose the destination when saving. Can a Mac record an external microphone? Yes—select it in Sound settings and in the recorder.
