How to turn a newsletter into a podcast

Adapt a written newsletter into a natural spoken episode, record it efficiently, and give readers a useful audio option without simply reading the page aloud.

By The Hilite team

01 — Choose the right newsletter material

Find an idea that benefits from voice

Not every newsletter should become an episode. Choose editions with a clear argument, story, lesson, or set of insights that can stand without links, charts, and visual formatting.

Combine short updates into a briefing, or expand one strong section with context and examples. Audio should give the audience a reason to listen rather than reproduce every sentence from the inbox.

02 — Rewrite for the ear

Turn written structure into spoken structure

Replace headings, bullet points, parenthetical asides, and link-heavy sentences with verbal signposts. Tell listeners where the episode is going, when you are changing topics, and why a detail matters.

Shorten sentences and use contractions. Read the script aloud while revising; any sentence that forces a second breath or sounds unnatural on the first attempt needs to be simplified.

03 — Add something the newsletter cannot

Use voice for context and personality

Include a short reflection, behind-the-scenes explanation, reader question, or updated example. These additions reward subscribers who consume both versions.

Describe important visuals and place source links in the show notes. Do not read long URLs or attempt to narrate a table cell by cell.

04 — Record in sections

Create clean edit points

Record the opening, main sections, and closing as distinct takes. Pause between ideas and restart a sentence cleanly after a mistake instead of apologizing inside the recording.

Use a consistent microphone position and saved recording setup. A repeatable workflow matters more than changing the production style for every newsletter.

05 — Edit for pace and clarity

Remove the traces of written prose

Use the transcript to find duplicated phrases, long quotations, and sentences that made sense on the page but feel dense in audio. Keep pauses that help listeners absorb the idea.

Add a short musical identity only if you have the required rights. The voice and argument should remain the product, not an elaborate intro.

06 — Connect the two channels

Let audio and email strengthen each other

Embed or link the episode in the newsletter, and place the newsletter’s sources and full links in the episode notes. Give listeners one clear way to subscribe to the written edition.

Track which topics earn both listening and reading. Over time, use the newsletter to test ideas and the podcast to deepen the ones that produce the strongest response.

Turn the plan into a finished episode.
