Inside the app, not in Files
Voice Memos keeps recordings in its own storage rather than saving them as loose files you can browse. That is why searching the Files app for a recording you just made turns up nothing.
To find a recording, open the Voice Memos app, which lives in the Utilities folder on the Home Screen. Everything you have recorded on that iPhone is in the list, newest first. If you use the app often, it is worth dragging it out of Utilities onto the Home Screen.
A new recording is named New Recording, or named after your location if Location Services is on. If you have several called New Recording, that setting is off, and renaming them as you go will save you searching later.
02 — If the list looks wrong
Folders, favourites and Recently Deleted
If a recording is missing from the main list, it is usually in a folder rather than gone. Tap the back arrow at the top left of the Voice Memos screen to step up to the folder view.
Some of these folders are built automatically. Apple Watch recordings, Favourites and Recently Deleted are Smart Folders, which means the app gathers them for you rather than you filing anything.
Deleted recordings sit in Recently Deleted for 30 days by default, so something you removed this week is still retrievable. You can change that window under Settings, Apps, Voice Memos, Clear Deleted, and there is a fuller walkthrough of recovering a deleted Voice Memo.
03 — Across your devices
How iCloud changes where recordings live
With Voice Memos turned on in iCloud, your recordings stop belonging to one device. They appear and stay up to date on every iPhone, iPad and Mac signed in to the same Apple Account.
To turn it on, go to Settings, tap your name at the top, tap iCloud, tap See All, then scroll down and turn on Voice Memos. On a Mac running macOS 15 or later, open System Settings, click your name, click iCloud, click See All, then turn on Voice Memos.
This is genuine syncing rather than a backup, and it cuts both ways. A recording you delete on the iPhone disappears from the Mac too. If a memo matters, export a copy rather than relying on sync to preserve it.
If a recording made on one device is not showing up on another, check that both are signed in to the same Apple Account and that Voice Memos is switched on in iCloud on both. That accounts for nearly every case.
04 — Getting a real file
Export a recording to the Files app
When you need a file you can attach, upload or edit elsewhere, export it. Open Voice Memos, tap the recording, tap the more button, then tap the share button. Scroll down, tap Save to Files, choose where you want it, and tap Save.
By default the export is an .m4a file. That flattens layered recordings and turns Spatial Audio into stereo, which is usually what you want for sharing. If you need to keep layers or effects adjustable, tap Options before sharing and choose Editable, which exports in QuickTime Audio format and lets you decide whether layers are merged or kept separate.
Some services will not accept .m4a. Google Slides, for one, only takes MP3 and WAV. When you hit that, convert the Voice Memo to MP3 and upload the converted file instead.
05 — On other devices
Finding the same recordings on Mac and Watch
On a Mac, the Voice Memos app holds the same list once iCloud sync is on, and you can drag a recording straight out of it into a folder. There is a step-by-step version in our guide to downloading a Voice Memo on Mac.
Anything you recorded on an Apple Watch arrives on the iPhone in its own Watch Recordings folder rather than mixed into the main list, which is why it can look missing at first.
